Michael Buffong is an award-winning theatre and television director and the Artistic Director of Talawa Theatre, the UK's most successful Black theatre company. His work has appeared on the main stages of the UK's most prominent theatres such as the National Theatre, the Royal Court and the Royal Exchange. His productions include the multi-award winning A Raisin in the Sun, King Lear (BBC4) and Guys and Dolls. As well as reimagining the classics, he has a strong track record of working with new writing, having directed the critically acclaimed A Kind of People (Royal Court), God's Property (Soho Theatre) and the Olivier nominated and Offie winning A Place For We (Park Theatre)

He works across media and most recently his production of Roy Williams Bess Loves Porgy for BBC Radios 3 and 4 won the BBC Audio Drama award for best adaptation with new music by Mercury nominated producer Swindle. 

His production of Play On! a musical featuring the songs of Duke Ellington, opened at the Lyric Hammersmith in January 2025.
